Cost Estimator - Cylindrical Part
Specify the basic dimensions in decimal inches of the custom part to be machined, and the quantity for each type of feature such as surfaces and holes. Note that dimensions are only required in the blue fields at the top. Other fields require just the quantity for each feature (such as the number of surfaces, holes, etc), not their size. The sample part displayed at right shows examples of most of the features. Select a tubular aluminum stock if possible since it is substantially less costly than the default solid stock. Also specify the number of external and internal threading if any, and optionally, the surface finish desired and any tolerance tighter than the standard 0.01". Then select the material you want your part made of, and finally click Estimate Cost at the bottom of the page. Only the data applicable to your part need to be entered. Any omitted fields will simply default to NONE or remain unselected. Click on a feature name for more details.

Material desired
Aluminum 6061 - Light, inexpensive, General purpose metal for telescope parts. Small pieces can be anodized black or various colors.
Brass - Visually appealing, found in antique and vintage telescopes. Can be polished to a high gloss.
Stainless Steel 303 - Medium toughness, resists oxidation, the prefered material when aluminum is just not strong enough.
Acetal - Also known as Delrin®, a DuPont brand name. Hard plastic, white or black. Easily machinable. Good for fittings, spacers, knobs, and generally parts not requiring as much strength as metal parts.
Teflon® - Tough plastic, low friction. Whitish color. Withstands high heat. Impervious to most chemical agents. Fairly costly. Teflon® is a DuPont trademark.
Bronze 655 - aka Silicon Bronze - Strong, resists abrasion and deformation. Excellent alternative to brass when the later is not tough enough for the job. Also good for bushings and bearings.
Titanium - As Strong as steel but only half the weight. Expensive.
Steel 1144 - General purpose steel. Inexpensive material but costlier to machine than aluminum. Hardenable.
Tool Steel O1 - High grade drill rod type steel. Small parts can be hardened.

This page is intended as a general guide to estimate the cost of machining a small part with standard features using solid stock (or aluminum tube if selected). Prices are estimated assuming "average" machining conditions and may be lower for simpler parts. Please always consult us for confirmation with the actual specifications of your part. Also contact us if your part includes special shapes or requires more complex machining. Check our FAQ page for additional information.
Although many parts can be made by turning and milling stock, and this is what we do best, some parts cannot be constructed by simple machining, others may require assembly of multiple components or may need to be built through different processes, such as casting, sheetmetal bending, etc. We will be glad to assist with special requirements.
